Reporter Trainee
Mission Viejo and Novato, California
Under the direction of an editor, the Reporter Trainee collects and analyzes information about trends and/or events to write for weekly publication. The Reporter Trainee will begin with copy editing with the intent to progress to reporting.
The ideal candidate should be a self-starter who can spot industry trends, analyze strategies, and cultivate insider sources. Experience reporting hard news or business news is a plus. Successful candidates will be able to work both independently and as part of a reporting/editing team.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Initiates stories independently and pursues story ideas assigned by the editor
- Identifies and tracks the major and emerging industry players and develops an understanding of the issues most important to the industry and the newsletter's readers
- Gathers and verifies factual information regarding story through interview and research
- Organizes material, determines slant or emphasis, and writes story according to prescribed editorial style and format standards
- Copy / layout editing
- Work closely together in creating a comprehensive report on upwards of 20 most significant players, events, trends and developments during the one- or two-week period covered by a newsletter
- Other related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Entry-level reporting experience on a daily or weekly publication preferred
- B.A. Journalism or related field
- Training in hard news writing for trade or traditional newspapers preferred
- Copy/Layout editing experience
- Must have the ability to work in a flexible, creative and collaborative environment, and possess strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to handle deadlines while researching and writing original stories for business savvy audiences
